Door Prep

  • Firstly prepare doors for receiving 3nr self-closing hinges i.e. if the door has 3 hinges previously fitted then ensure the ‘cut-out’ is large enough for the new hinges to be fitted. If it’s not large enough then neatly enlarge the ‘cut-out’ to suit. If there were previously 2 hinges on the door, ensure they are large enough to take the new hinges and neatly cut a third ‘cut-out’ for the additional hinge. Then apply Intumescent card system.
  • Surface Preparation; Generally: scrape off loose paint and thoroughly clean the panels and stiles of the door. Next use Envirograf degreaser to clean both sides of the door. Panels: as general spec plus rub-down the door panels (including corners and edges) with coarse glass paper, providing a good key for the adhesive.

Intumescent Paint Application

  • Then apply intumescent paint to all woodwork (both sides) except the panels being upgraded on the room side. Which will require • 1 coat primer @ 10m2/L • 2 coats intumescent @ 8m2/L.
  • This can be done using a roller, sprayer or brush.

Veneer and Fire Seal Application

  • 1 thin coat of stabond to panels only.
  • Measure the panel size and cut out the veneer card required.
  • Apply intumescent adhesive to the panel and the grey side of the veneered card.
  • Apply the veneered card to the panel-risk side only.
  • Using a flexible spatula firmly press the veneered card to the panel ensuring absolute contact over the whole surface.
  • Finally allow to dry - minimum 4 hours at room temperature before applying 2 coats HW01/F at 8m2/L to the new panels and 1 coat HW/UC undercoat until the whole face of the doors is covered.
  • Now insert intumescent fire and smoke seal (cut and trim around hinges i.e. fully interrupted around hinges) – Please note this item will be removed after re-hanging and re-installed on a separate visit after the doors have been painted to the desired finish by the main contractor. This will ensure the protection of the delicate brush seals from paint
  • Attach new hinges (with intumescent backing if required).
  • Wrap new lock with LPH and nsert into door; attach new ironmongery with intumescent material (cut to size) behind it (where required).
  • Attach new overhead door closing mechanism (supplied by others) including the application of intumescent material to closer as required. 14. Re-hang door, ease and adjust the self-closing device.
  • Rehanging Door on Upgraded frame:
  • If the previous door had two hinges, then the frame will be cut to accommodate the 3rd hinge 2. Re-hang door on 3nr hinges (supplied by others) 3. Ease and adjust the door to ensure: a. An even gap as far as possible around the door head and closing stiles – 5mm max along head and stile’s, 8mm along.
