Fire rating Lath and Plaster walls in a heritage building
Fitzwilliam Place, Dublin
Here, we proudly showcase a remarkable achievement in fire rating at Fitzwilliam Place, a cherished heritage building in the heart of Dublin. Our efforts were focused on upgrading 785 square footage of lath and plaster walls to an impressive 60-minute fire rating, made possible by utilizing the innovative Envirograf EP/CP coating system. For more information about this exceptional coating system, please visit the Envirograf Ireland website at Envirografireland.com.
Purpose
This was applied using a high power sprayer to give it a clean, untextured finish. This also helps to give it a more durable and impenetrable barrier to protect against the spread of flames across a wall and ultimately on to the next wall, threatening to compromise the compartmentation of the building and cause rapid spread of flames through the structure of the building.
Application
This paint was applied with one coat at 100 microns with the EP/CP/P (primer), 2 coats at 125 microns with the EP/CP/IN (intumescent fire rated paint) and 1 coat at 100 microns for the HWAC (protective top coat). This 3 layered system gives a durable and protective 60 minute fire rating with the aim of giving all occupants of the building adequate time to safely and effectively evacuate the building. This is the first priority. The Second priority is to conserve the building of being totally destroyed before emergency services can put out the flames and protect the buildings and people surrounding it.
Considerations
Since this is a listed building, like all other listed buildings, it needs listed building consent in order to start any work on it. Thus, indicating its precious and valued nature of being a heritage building in Dublins strong standing historic Georgian infrastructure. For this reason it was very important that we approached this job with acute precision and be resolute in our standards in order to achieve the specified fire rating on the walls whilst ensuring not to interfere with the admired age worn essence of the building.
