Fire & Intumescent Coatings

Intumescent paints and coatings are an important element of passive fire protection, as they can be applied to a variety of combustible building materials in order to bring them into compliance with fire regulations.

Intumescent paint reacts when its temperature attains or exceeds 120°C, and the process results in a soft charring effect at its surface (which insulates and reduces transmission of heat into the substrate) and the release of water vapour (which helps to cool the substrate).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is fire retardant paint?

Fire retardant paint is the strongest paint for fire resistance. This paint stops fires from spreading by releasing a flame dampening gas when it reaches a certain temperature. Once their effectiveness has been proven it can be applied to ceilings, timber, plaster, walls and floors. For more information on our coating services contact us on +44 (0)75 7200 9195 or email us at flammaltd@icloud.com

How does intumescent paint work?

In the event of a fire, intumescent paint will char and swell up, creating an insulated coating that protects any materials from the heat of the fire. For more information on our coating services contact us on +44 (0)75 7200 9195 or email us at flammaltd@icloud.com

Can you paint over intumescent paint?

Intumescent paint can be applied over existing coatings and can be over coated with acrylic paint where a finish is required. Once applied to the strict application instructions intumescent paint can then be coated with a decorative finish, check with suppliers to ensure this is applicable as some intumescent paints require a protective coating before a decorative finish is applied.

How to apply intumescent paint?

Intumescent paint must be applied in a specific way, furthermore, it should be applied by competent, trained and certified installers for quality assurance. For more information contact us on +44 (0)75 7200 9195  or email us at flammaltd@icloud.com. We apply the coatings to achieve the best fire protection for your building.

How to fireproof wood?

You can fireproof wood by applying fire-retardant or intumescent paint to the structure, this will provide a protective layer to your building in the event of a fire, giving occupants ample time to escape the flames. For more information on our application services contact us on +44 (0)75 7200 9195 or email us at flammaltd@icloud.com

Coatings to Steel

Fire retardant & Intumescent paint for steel

Intumescent and fire retardant coatings will increase the structural stability of your building in the event of a fire. Unprotected steelwork can reach very high temperatures causing the structural steel to lose its load bearing capacity and collapse. We supply and apply protective paint for steel, structural steel and cast iron.

Heat resistant and intumescent coatings for structured steel

Building regulations and BS/EN standards demands that both materials and workmanship meet the required standards for structural steel. Our certified technicians have the ability to apply a range of intumescent and fire retardant coatings to any structured steel. Envirograf– one of the world leading designers and manufacturer's of passive fire protection products supply our intumescent steel paint. We also use industry standards such as Jotun and Fretex.

Protective fire rated coatings for steel

Envirograf's steel intumescent paint has been tested on steel covered in multiple coats of trade paint. Consequently, existing coated steel can be upgraded without resorting to grit blasting or stripping the existing coatings of steel. The Envirograf system provides, 30/60/90 minutes protection when applied over multiple layers off the paint. It is ideal for both internal and external use, dries within one hour under normal conditions, can be applied to untreated surfaces and provides a low odorous solution. The steel paint can also be applied to previously coated surfaces with the use of our internal and external primers.

Coatings to Plasterboard

Fire retardant and intumescent paint for plasterboards, walls and ceilings

Intumescent paint can be applied to lath and plaster and plasterboard walls and ceilings to upgrade them to 30 / 60 minutes integrity and insulation. Intumescent paint in the event of a fire will delay the flames from spreading and impacting the integrity and structure enabling in a longer time for evacuation. We supply and install intumescent paint suitable for plasterboards, lath-and-plaster, coving, ceiling and walls.

Heat resistant and intumescent coatings for plasterboards, walls and ceilings

Our water based paint is the ideal solution for upgrading the fire rating of features in historic buildings. Once we have surveyed and examined your building we will recommend the best fire protection for your structure, applying the recommended primers, top coats and varnishes.

Protective fire rated coatings for plasterboards, walls and ceilings

All our fire retardant and intumescent paints have been tested on a wide variety of plasterboards, ceilings and walls. The white fire resistant coating is the ideal solution for plasterboards that require an updated fire rating but cannot be replaced. When the paint is applied to a plasterboard attached to a timber stud partition it can achieve an integrity and insulation of 71 minutes. If the paint is applied to a plasterboard beneath a loaded timber floor it can achieve a fire resistance of 61 minutes and when applied to a lath-and-plaster ceiling it can achieve a fire resistance of 60 minutes. When the materials are exposed to the flames from a fire the paint will protect the integrity and insulation of the coated surface.

Can my wall/ceiling be upgraded?

Wall and ceiling upgrades are dependant on the quality of the existing substrate. If a wall or ceiling is in good repair and well adhered to the structure then most walls and ceilings can successfully be upgraded using our paint system. If a ceiling is in poor condition or loosely adhered to laths then we would recommend the use of our underfloor barrier system.
