Firestopping

Passive fire products are used as fire stopping to protect structural openings where services pass through building elements. Such as fire-rated ceilings, floors, and walls, to maintain their integrity. These intumescent systems of passive fire products are installed and remain passive until they are required to do their fire protection job.

Passive fire products are the first line of defence in a fire. They work by reacting to fire without human intervention. This is done by sealing openings to contain the fire in a building compartment, by retarding the passage of flames across a surface, and by resisting the penetration of fire into structural elements such as doors. This limits the damage to property and gives additional time for people to evacuate safely from the building. It also allows firefighters to get to the scene to eliminate the fire.

Scope of Works

Firestopping existing service penetrations between rooms and floors both horizontally and vertically as well as gaps under stud walling and suspended ceiling hole. So as to compartmentalise fire risk sections of the building, reducing the spread of flame and smoke.

Specification

Fire Stopping – Flamma Ltd Installation

  • First measure the gap and cut intumescent sponge with sufficient excess thickness to create a tight compressible fit (min 10mm compression).
  • Then compress and insert the sponge into gap allowing it to expand when in place; press 40mm thick sponge into opening deeper than the thickness of the sponge to allow for intumescent cement coating.
  • Next joint the cut ends of the sponge with intumescent mastic.
  • Then continue until the whole gap is completed
  • Finally apply intumescent cement to the face of the sponge and spatula a smooth even finish.
